When people say, “Walk a mile in someone else’s shoes,” they don’t typically mean it literally.

Except when they are talking about the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event.

The event, held annually in October, is designed to stop domestic violence by putting people in another person's shoes, emphasizing empathy for others. Participants, including men, wear high heels or traditionally feminine shoes. 

It is host locally by the Northwest Georgia Family Crisis Center and Dalton State's chapter of Lambda Alpha Epsilon, a registered student organization for criminal justice majors, and serves as a fundraiser for the Crisis Center. The center is a nonprofit organization that provides shelter, advocacy, and support to victims of domestic violence. 

Participants dressed up in masks, crowns, and scarves and carried signs with messages against domestic violence. Purple is often worn because it is the domestic violence awareness color.

After dressing up, some of the men participated in a beauty contest.

As they pose, the judges picked the winner.

Cpt. Chris Cook with the Dalton Police Department spoke about educating everyone on what the event stands for - stopping domestic violence. Approximately one in four women and one in seven men will be victims of violence at the hands of an intimate partner.

Everyone walked around campus holding their signs for all to see.

The event is "an interesting twist to a serious topic," as one student stated.
